This significant mining event continues to be very popular and worthwhile with both mining companies and investors – demonstrated again this year by selling out early despite the economic climate. Queensland’s dynamic mining industry continues to provide a range of exploration opportunities including initiatives for sources of renewable energy. Thanks to the buoyancy of our resource industry, Queensland and Australia weathered the global financial crisis better than most other countries. Mining investment across Queensland is expanding at a record pace as companies look to emerging market opportunities both within Australia and globally. International investment in Queensland’s mining sector continues to grow, with significant joint venture partnerships secured for the long-term benefit of our State. Investment in mining technology, health and safety, environmental rehabilitation, and exploration and research are fundamental to driving industry advancements. The Queensland Government supports the mining industry through a low tax regime, competitive labour costs, electricity prices among the lowest in Australia, a highly skilled workforce, partnerships in government and industry research, and world-class infrastructure. As Minister, I’m pleased to welcome delegates to Mining 2009 and
