Mining investment across Queensland is expanding at a record pace as the companies look to emerging market opportunities both within Australia and globally. International investment in Queensland’s mining sector is also growing, with significant joint venture partnerships secured for the long-term benefit of our State. Investing in mining technology, environmental rehabilitation, exploration and research are fundamental to our reputation as the Smart State, and continue to drive industry development. The Queensland Government’s support for the mining industry is emphasised through a low tax regime, competitive labour costs, electricity prices among the lowest in Australia, partnerships in government and industry research, the establishment of world-class ports and decentralised road and rail networks. As Minister, I’m pleased to welcome delegates to Mining 2008, and
I look forward to addressing this important conference.
